GAG ME WITH A SPOON (but please don't take photos of me while you're doing it)

Why does Terry Richardson insist on re-creating a version himself in his models? Those tired grandpa glasses, the thumbs up. . . I can't think of any other photographers who do that. Usually a photographer creates a personal style by using certain themes or photographic techniques or. Ellen Von Unwerth and Jonathan Leder have that sexy vintage look, Annie Leibovitz does the big production celebrity thing, Chadwick Tyler usually has desaturated eerie images.

I just don't think that Terry has that much going on in his photos. They often have a stark white background, use some form of sexual subordination between male and female models. Or female models and him. and never really grab my attention.

Thoughts?

I agree about terry being a little boring now. But damn girl! Harsh.

the photos grab your attention enough for you to write about it :) which is his schtick in and of itself.

i do agree with you about him not having much going on in his pictures. their simple and cheap lewdness is uninspiring.
i'm a little curious to know how he feels about his own work.

i just think his work has gotten very self indulgent...he used to have much more interesting and original material. i follow him on tumblr and everything he shows on his website is cheap, low quality photos of celebrities and models dressing up as him and posing with him. I wonder what thats all about? when did his "art" become his own self promotion and ego?

Lately, he hasn't really been innovative in any sort of way. His images constantly make me yawn nowadays tbh but he seems to make a good living out of this aesthetic (if you can call it that) and who can blame him for that?

I agree with Miranda.
I think maybe the issue with making his models put on the 'trademark' glasses & thumbs up probably reflects both his personality and a post modern will to view the viewer; If we wish to identify with our audience then mimicking it (using the photographer as an ersatz consuming public) enables the viewed to take on the role of the viewer. Or maybe it's just vanity.

terry richardson is not creative or interesting, to me. i also, to be fair, think he is a creep and after seeing Picture Me, i really felt for the models who have had to work with him, it sounds like hell. (and Yes,I am assuming Sena Cech was talking about him in the film since it doesn't seem far fetched)

i have to agree with your opinion on terry richardson. his style definitely exploits sex and gender roles... i think anyone can do what he does. the only difference is that he has access to these models and celebrities.

his "style" is just boring and flat. the photos don't express anything.

thank you! i've been saying this about his work for the longest while. i find him incredibly sleazy and his work for the most part either dull or creepy.

He's just voyeuring his imagined fantasy life. People with truly interesting lives aren't consumed with pitching into peoples faces.

Well the only thing i, is that its Terry's look, thats why he is who he is... yes he should be able to go outside of the box now that he's well known, but then that would make him just like every other photographer.

I know I'm quite out of the topic here, but that cheapsocceruniforms posted up the ads in between all these comments about terry's work was kinda funny and very out of place. What a bunghole.

I still like terry's work though. A bit obnoxious but those hipsterish faux frames are his signature. Can't lie.
